Inspiring Woman Award: Past Winners.

The 2010 Inspiring Woman Award recipient, Cheryl Perry

Millie Falconer accepted the Waterloo Region Inspiring Women award at the annual Inspiring Women Event in September 2011. Her desire to learn and pass on her knowledge led her to learn the Mohawk language and more about her Aboriginal roots. Reaching out to the youth of the Mohawk First Nations, Millie encourage youth to learn more about their heritage. Millie was honoured with becoming an Elder for her dedication to the Mohawk people and community. She is currently working towards bringing a medical clinic to her native reserve in Bala and many people continually come to her for advice. Millie says “a lot of the young people are getting interested now,” when it comes to learning about their heritage. Thanks to the work that Millie Falconer is doing, the youth are getting every opportunity to continue learning about their rich heritage.

When receiving her award, Millie spoke about overcoming the challenges of not being allowed to practice her heritage. “Now a word of wisdom: you’re never given more than your shoulders can hold,” said this inspiring woman.  Millie did not let others discouraging words get in her way and this resonated with the 600 women in the audience.
